Dance (Hani-mation)
This self-portrait series, "Dance (Hani-mation)", captures the raw emotional expression of the artist through movement. What began as spontaneous, private dance sessions in her Berlin studio evolved into a quiet internal act of resistance — against identity, structure, and expectation. This work is an impromptu expression, a letting go through rhythm, memory, and emotion.

Using a remote-controlled camera, she captured over 400 frames while moving freely to music. This approach allowed her to remain immersed in the moment, focusing not on how she looked but on how she felt. Stripped of makeup, costume, or external performance, she aimed to reveal an honest presence of herself: as a woman, as a Korean, and as an artist navigating the complexities of living in a foreign land.
The choice of nudity in this series is not simply a symbol of freedom in the Western context. It is rather an act of exposure that calls for emotional openness, while also confronting the discomfort and fragility it carries —particularly within the context of her Korean upbringing, where nudity is not commonly a form of self-expression.
This series reflects Berlin’s energy of freedom and creative expression, alongside its moments of greyness, loneliness and alienation. Dancing becomes not only the way to reveal herself, but also a way to express the emotional landscape of the city. In Berlin, one may find freedom, solitude, fragility, and a sense of being lost.
Living in a foreign land requires a constant translation of who I am. As the past version of herself grows faint, "Dance (Hani-mation)", becomes a gesture to reach out, to remember her and to reconnect.
